The legal system imposes few positive obligations on its citizens. There is no obligation to help a stranger, for instance, even in an emergency and at little cost to ourselves. There is nothing new in this. In the Ten Commandments, five of the six commandments that deal with interpersonal obligations are negative commands. Jesus, in the Golden Rule, was more ambitious in that he imposed an affirmative obligation.
