After the 300 or so meals I've eaten out in the last year, it is readily apparent there are two distinct philosophies on selling. The first is the monotone, robotic cashier or server going through the motions of suggestive selling because they "have to do it" (or, even, a tape-recorded greeting playing in the drive-thru). The second is the non-existence of suggestions at all: "It's on the menu; they'll order it if they want it."
